HOOP MOUNTAIN HISTORY

Hoop Mountain was formed in 1985 in Boston by Steve Gibbs. At the time he published a high school basketball scouting service newsletter for coaches at colleges, universities and prep schools in the East.

Gibbs remains with Hoop Mountain as president while finding time to serve as a high school basketball coach in the Boston suburbs. He also is a member of the McDonald's All-Star Game Selection Committee.

Since Hoop Mountain opened, over 26,000 boys have attended various events such as shootouts, showcase games, personal coaching programs, and summer camps. Presently, there are nine Hoop Mountain locations in the U.S.

All Hoop Mountain affiliates share a common mission: Bring together top-notch athletes with great coaches at super facilities. Their ability to reach these goals has resulted in Hoop Mountain becoming recognized nationally as one of the top two or three instructional camps in the country.

Hoop Mountain Midwest Boys came on the scene in 2000. It offers events in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Ed Ross is president and formerly was CEO of Ross Marketing Co. for over 20 years.

"The first thing I did," Ross said, "was to phone Gordie Kerkman, the highly successful head coach at West Aurora High School. After several meetings, he signed on as a consultant and agreed to become head coach at our camps. That was the best thing I could have done. He's a terrific coach and an even better person."

Kerkman selects the coaching staff and is involved in the camp schedules, content, and other matters related to basketball. He also acts as head coach of the Super Week camp. Ross is in charge of marketing.

Bob Schmidt joined as a partner of the company in 2006. He is the former CFO of several companies and is in charge of finance and operations. Bob's son Mike was a previous trophy winner of the Best Shooter Award at the Shooting Camp and has been a counselor at Hoop Mountain for a number of years. Mike graduated in 2008 from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. He was a 1000 point scorer while a member of the Grinnell basketball team.
